MiDAS for Car and MPV drivers

Sheffield Community Transport will be offering MiDAS for Car and MPV drivers from 1st August 2010.

MiDAS Car & MPV provides the opportunity for organisations operating smaller vehicles, or voluntary car schemes, to deliver the same level of training to their drivers as MiDAS gives to minibus drivers, including regular refresher training.

It follows the same modular format, providing drivers with the information they need to provide safe and comfortable transport for their passengers.  There is additional training for those who may be driving accessible MPV’s and passenger assistance training for those who may be transporting passengers with disabilities in saloon cars.  There is also an on-road element, where drivers undertake an ‘Observed Drive’ during which they can demonstrate the skills learned in the classroom.

MiDAS Car & MPV recognises that some members may have drivers using their own vehicles and for this reason the organisation has the option to ‘opt out’ of the Observed Drive.

Route 31/31A Coun Diane Leek, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Walkley, wrote in a letter to the Sheffield Star on 25 January 2010: " I reassure users of the 31 and 31A bus route from Sheffield Interchange to Hillsborough Interchange that this service will be continuing, although the operator is changing.

I would like to thank Sheffield Community Transport, who have developed the service from an irregular service constantly under threat, to a reliable high quality service which is vital for the people who live in my ward.

From Jan 31, the service will be run by TM Travel. There will be no changes to the route, and the service will still run at 30 minute intervals. There will be some minor changes to evening and Sunday services.

Get a copy of the new timetable from either Hillsborough or Sheffield Interchange, call South Yorkshire Traveline on: 01709 515151, or go onto their website at: http://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/

I urge local people to continue using this service, as it a real benefit to the community ."

Route 1 Magazine Aug 2009 article

We were very pleased to feature in the August 2009 edition of Route 1 Magazine which serves all sections of the bus industry.  Andy Izatt from Route 1 spent a whole afternoon at SCT and the resulting article shows how Community Transport fits into the whole public transport mix and how SCT especially sees its role.  Download a copy of the article here.

S6A

The Sunshine Shuttle

Harry Dakin wrote in the Sheffield Star's Viewpoint column on 23 July 2009:

I'm a huge fan of this busy little outfit [SCT] and, over the course of the last five months, I've travelled some of its routes many dozens of times and I'm more than impressed with what I've seen.

I've chatted to passengers on the various journeys and, hand on heart, I've yet to hear a negative comment about either the service or the sociable drivers.

It's apparent that, on just about every SCT bus I've travelled on, there's actually an almost tangible, on-board cheerful atmosphere, and it's no secret that our own local service, the S6A, is affectionately referred to as 'The Sunshine Shuttle'.

Hospital Connection

New Hospital Connexion Service

Sheffield Community Transport has been awarded the contract to run the half-hourly Hospital Connexion service between the Northern General Hospital and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Download a timetable here.

Highly Commended: Sheffield Community Transport

Sheffield Community Transport were highly commended for the Community Award, for their longstanding development and operation of community bus and car-sharing schemes, most recently working to produce electric hybrid low floor buses. The project, which started last year, will significantly reduce vehicle emissions and if the pilot is successful on the first two buses, the technology will be rolled out into more vehicles. (Barbara Rimmington stood in for Ian Jenkinson at the awards ceremony).

284 bus

The Service 284 bio-diesel bus leaves Sheffield Interchange at 8.30am, 10.30am, 2.25pm and 4.25pm, and for train passengers from Manchester, it leaves Hathersage rail station an hour later in each case.

It takes in the major access points for Burbage Valley, Higger Tor and Stanage Edge, as well as Hathersage centre, picking up at Ringinglow and all stops in and out of Sheffield. It is run by Sheffield Community Transport using a fully-accessible bus, with space for a couple of bikes and climbing equipment.

Grab your boots and bikes for the 284 Sunday bus to Stanage

City-based walkers, climbers and cyclists can forget the car and take a bus to the glorious Peak District around Stanage Edge every Sunday and Bank Holiday until mid-October - for only £2 return.

Geoff Nickolds, Peak District National Park member representative for recreation, said: “This Sunday/Bank Holiday service is great for walkers, climbers and cyclists - and for the planet.

“It saves the need to find a parking space on busy weekends, and with fares capped at £2 return, it is affordable for non-car owners who may not be able to visit the countryside otherwise. Using the bus reduces congestion, it means fewer cars spoiling the views, and it saves on climate-warming carbon emissions.”

The environmentally-friendly, low-cost service is running 12 weeks longer than last year, and the timetable has been improved after consultation with climbers and walkers through the Stanage Forum. It means the first bus from Sheffield departs half an hour earlier than last year for those keen to get an early start on the Edge.

And an earlier first bus from Hathersage station (9.30am) means that people coming by train from Manchester have just enough time to buy breakfast before getting the bus up the hill to Stanage.

The service is subsidised by the South Yorkshire Transport Executive, the British Mountaineering Council’s Access and Conservation Trust, High Peak and Hope Valley Community Rail Partnership and the Peak District National Park Authority.

S6A

All smiles on S6A bus

Read Harry Dakin's letter to the Star on Saturday 14 March - "for the first time in more than six years us Wadsley, Wisewood and Loxley folk have only gone and landed ourselves the best little bus service anywhere this side of the Boston Stump, haven't we. It's the S6A!"

S6A timetable Hillsborough-Loxley service, runs every half hour with a standard £1 adult single fare (all concessions apply).

Periodic Training Delivery Schedule

Driver CPCSCT is an approved centre for the new EU Driver Certificate of Professional Competence.  The qualification is a requirement for all new and existing PCV drivers and we believe that it will be a very positive step for the bus industry.

We offer two courses, Accessible Customer Service, and First Aid. Accessible Customer Service focuses on ways that drivers can improve the quality of journey for all their passengers including disabled people.

Details of course dates can be found here.

Community Transport in South Yorkshire

In October 2007, SCT became the lead body for Community Transport in the county.  Funding for CT from South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive is now channelled through SCT.  We have Service Level Agreements in place with our colleagues in Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster as well as three smaller schemes in Sheffield. A new website has been created which will be developed as progress is made.

We are working closely together to promote closer operational co-operation and to provide a more coherent offer to passengers across South Yorkshire.  For example we will work to standardise fares for the different services we provide.  Already all new vehicles and some of the existing ones have the same ‘Door-to-door’ livery which creates a much more impressive image as part of the Travel South Yorkshire brand.

Low floor, low carbon minibus

We were successful in gaining funding from Sheffield Enterprise Clusters and the Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon and Fuel Cell Technologies for a feasibility study into a low floor, low carbon minibus.  We believe that if such a vehicle could be manufactured in sufficient volumes, there would be a huge take-up.  The study will hopefully pave the way for the next stage which will involve active research and development.

Access to Opportunities Project

We are working closely with SYPTE to develop a package of transport related measures designed to assist the economic regeneration of the sub-region.  In particular we are hoping to extend and expand the very successful South Yorkshire Wheels to Work project.  Funding partners include Yorkshire Forward and Coalfields Regeneration Trust  For some employment opportunities public transport just isn’t there at the right times or locations.  The scheme has shown that by loaning out motorised two-wheelers to mostly younger people, they are able to take up job offers and get a foothold in the world of work.
